What every owner should know
- Registration: generally needed once turnover crosses ₹40 lakh for goods or ₹20 lakh for services in Tamil Nadu. Selling online or between states can require it earlier.
- Composition scheme: a simpler option with a flat rate for smaller businesses (up to ₹1.5 crore turnover for most goods businesses), but you can't claim input tax credit.
- Input tax credit: you can only claim what your suppliers have filed. Unmatched credit is the most common cause of notices.
- Dates: monthly or quarterly returns, and late fees and interest add up fast.
